This is something that most people won’t have to do on a regular basis, but most people at some time in their lives give a talk in front of others, and for some it’s not the amount of people that matters its being watched even by a few people is enough to fill them with fear.
So we are back to fear again, so what could be frightening about speaking in front of others? There are many potential problems:
Looking silly or foolish
Saying something wrong
Make a mistake or losing your place
Forgetting what to say and looking foolish
Being judged as incompetent or boring
Losing the flow or being laughed at
Being judged by the audience as incompetent
Forgetting your lines or an important point
Being unintelligible
So as we can see, anxiety can play a critical part in inhibiting people from delivering a clear confident talk.
Fear is at the root:
A fear of failing
A fear of not coping
A fear of forgetting what to say
So how do we remove the fear?
Here are two ways that may help
Prepare for danger i.e. what could go wrong, well let’s say you forget your words, then it may be a good idea to have your talk written down in chunks so as you go through your talk you will know that if your memory fails you could just read the words, that in itself can give you confidence.
So now that you know that your talk is taken care of, let’s look at falling over.
Why would you fall over? You wouldn’t, you just have a fear of it, imagining a catastrophe, and even if you did people would be concerned and help you.
When you realise that there is nothing to fear you can talk with confidence and really enjoy it. People who speak in public often feel relaxed and have fun, that’s because they so no danger anymore, they have become relaxed as the imagined fear has subsided.
Jesus wants us to put our trust in him, so when we act we are acting for God and in that way we only have to please God and not man, so it matters less what people think and you can talk knowing that God is with you, encouraging you in his wonderful love.
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Jesus Christ
PHILIPPIANS 4:6,7 KJV
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6 NIV
A simple prayer:
Dear Jesus, I thank you and put my trust in you, you are always at my side even when feeling desperate; I know that you will never let me down, forgive me for the times that I have disappointed you, guide me and teach me, please help me to be confident in front of others, fill me with your power, I pray for healing and peace in the love and assurance that you died and rose again for me, amen
