Calm me Lord

Odd as it may sound, learning how to relax is key to staying relaxed. It sounds obvious, but a person in a state of anxiety finds it hard to relax. An overactive and anxious mind is prone to worry, even trying to sleep at night, tucked up in bed can be a time of tension. It is important to look at what relaxation is: it’s the opposite of anxiety, namely a feeling of calm, peace and tranquility. So why is it so hard to achiieve?

There is an expectation for anxious people that to be relaxed you need to be quiet. Well, this can be true for many, but for some the problem with this is for an anxious person they are feeling emotions of fear: imagine that you were in the jungle and you were being hunted by a tiger, you may be quiet but you certainly wouldn’t be relaxed! That is how it feels for many people with anxiety, feeling 'on edge', even though they might be putting their feet up. This feeling of being 'on edge' can lead to outbursts of anger or frustration due to a build up of anxiety chemicals, and anxious thoughts. Often people feel more relaxed after emptying their thoughts to find peace, a sort of meditation. Meditating on a passage from the Bible helps some people. Sometimes people with anxiety need to find relaxation in some kind of activity that take the mind off their anxiety; even a game of football can be relaxing to an anxious person as they are burning off the chemicals in the blood that cause tension, and releasing natural 'feel good' hormones. People often say they feel relaxed after exercise. (But do remember to consult your Doctor before exercising if it is new to you)

There are many conventional ways to relax from listening to music to painting or even just watching TV. As Christians we can find relaxation in praying and spending time in the company of God, reading the Bible is a great comfort, and if you have God TV, or can get podcasts or worship music for your MP3 player, and if you’re anxious during the night, listening to or watching these can really help.

Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.
Psalm 62:8 NIV

Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your soul. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
Matthew 11:28-30 NIV

"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever."
Psalm 23
